20th July, 2011 – New photos from the construction of Whyalla Public Library.
Construction is advancing and we can see the building take shape. The sunshades on the facade have already been assembled and attached and it becomes clear from the internal photos that this will be a pleasant space.
11th April, 2011 – Geoff Jarvis, the EnvironArc Project Manager for the new Whyalla Public Library, advises that this exciting new high profile project is nearing “lock-up”. Geoff praised Barry Porter, the site manager for WCK Constructions, for his outstanding efforts.
Project: New Public Library, Whyalla
Location: Whyalla, South Australia
Location Challenges: The Whyalla Library is a 1200 square metre building situated between the heritage listed Mt Laura homestead and the local shopping centre. The local council specifically wanted the library to be a central hub with access to a place where larger numbers of people would generally be found, eg. people shopping with their children.
Design Aspects: Designing the building involved much community consultation and many changes.
Environmental Innovation:
The Council plans to obtain a 6-star green rating from the Green Building Council of Australia for the complex and so is bringing in a range of ESD initiatives and a number of energy saving features. Shading has been an important design feature because of the position of the building, which was dictated by availability of land. Stormwater harvesting is a major feature with the building being self sufficient in this area.

Specialist Expertise: EnvironArc was able to support to the local Council when putting together funding applications for Federal grant money.
